Apply for a Certificate of Marital Status

Yes. In order to get married in Denmark, you must fulfill the general conditions for marriage. You can read about the marriage requirements here.

Here is what you need to have ready before filling out the application form:

• Your passport – you must include pictures of all pages of the passport, including the front and back cover pages and any blank pages. The pictures must be in color and of very high quality (refer to the image quality guide).
• If you are a citizen of the EU, you can use your ID card instead of your passport – we require pictures of both sides of the ID card. The pictures must be in color and of very high quality (refer to the image quality guide).
• Documentation of your right to enter and stay in Denmark. On the legal residence page you can find more information about documentation requirements.
• A certificate of marital status, if relevant, from your current country of residence. If you live in Denmark, you do not need to provide documentation of marital status.
• If you live together outside of Denmark, we require a residence certificate or similar documentation. This document must be included in both its original language and in a version translated into Danish, English, or German.
• If you have one or more children together you must provide birth certificates for your children. This documentation must be included in both its original language and a version translated into Danish, English, or German.
• If you have previously been married, you must provide documentation that the marriage ended through divorce, death, or annulment. This could be in the form of a copy of a divorce decree, a death certificate, or an annulment. This documentation must be included in both its original language and a version translated into Danish, English, or German.

Tips for ensuring the best possible image quality

• The entire document must be captured, including all corners and edges of the passport, as well as any blank pages and covers.
• We recommend taking a photograph of the document or passport with a smartphone rather than using a scanner.
• Position the camera directly above the documentation and ensure even lighting.
• Avoid glare/reflections and backlighting
• Use the highest resolution possible (1600 x 1200 dpi, or approximately 1 megabit per page).
• Upload photos in their original file format.
• Refrain from inserting images into text documents.
• Do not compress the file when sending it.

In order for the Agency of Family Law to process your application for a Certificate of Marital Status, you must pay a fee of DKK 2,100. This fee is reviewed and adjusted annually.

The Agency of Family Law will not begin processing your application until the fee has been received in our account. If the fee is not received shortly after the application is submitted, we will issue a reminder for payment. Should the fee remain unpaid, we will decline to process your application.

Please note that the administration fee is not refundable once you have sent your application.

Payment of fee

You pay the fee when completing the digital application form. The payment is processed when you sign and submit the application. Please ensure you have your chosen payment option ready while filling out the application. The following payment options are accepted: Apple Pay, Google Pay, Mastercard, Mastercard Debit, MobilePay, Visa, Visa Debit, Visa Electron, and Wallet.

The Agency of Family Law does not accept cash or cheques.

• Certain countries require documentation to confirm that you meet the conditions for marriage under Danish law, which is provided through a Certificate of Marital Status.
• Other countries may only require you to demonstrate your marital status with a civil status certificate.

Certificate of Marital Status

If you need documentation to show that you fulfill the conditions for marriage under Danish law, you will need a Certificate of Marital Status. You can apply for one on this page. Please specify in your application that you intend to marry abroad. To obtain a Certificate of Marital Status both of you must meet the requirements of the Danish Marriage Act, even if one or both of you reside outside of Denmark.

Documentation of marital status

If you need to provide document your marital status, please contact your local municipality. They can issue either a certificate of residence or an extract from the Civil Registration System (CPR) that confirms your marital status.

If you are uncertain about the requirements for the country in which you wish to marry, reach out to the authority responsible for marriages in that country.

Please be aware that due to the prohibition of sham marriages a Certificate of Marital Status cannot be issued to just one party.

A Certificate of Marital Status is valid for four months from the date it is issued.

If you do not marry within this period, the certificate will expire, and you will need to reapply. In the event of a reapplication, you must submit all documents again and pay a new fee.

If your passport, visa, or residence permit has an earlier expiry date than a Certificate of Marital Status otherwise would have, the validity of the certificate may be adjusted accordingly. This means a Certificate of Marital Status could be valid for less than four months.

Power of Attorney

If you would like someone else – such as a family member or a wedding agency – to apply for a Certificate of Marital Status on your behalf, you must give them the power of attorney to do so. This is done by submitting a power of attorney form to the Agency of Family Law, including both of your original signatures. This power of attorney must accompany your application.

If you wish to revoke a power of attorney, you must provide written notice to both the Agency of Family Law and to the individual to whom you granted the power of attorney.

If such a representative is applying on your behalf, they will need to use the digital application form and log in using SMS login.
