Marriage conditions

To marry in Denmark, several conditions must be fulfilled. You can find information about these conditions on this page.

Both partners must be at least 18 years old and must be unmarried.

If either partner was previously married, that marriage must have been legally dissolved before a new marriage can take place.

Marriages between close relatives are prohibited, and if one partner is under guardianship, the guardian must consent to the marriage.

We need your details

We need to know if either you or your partner has been married before. Therefore, the application includes questions about this.

If we find there is a specific need to verify that both of you are unmarried, we may request a certificate of marital status from your country of residence. If you have only lived in your current country for a short time, we might also ask for certificates of marital status from other countries where you have resided.

If you do not provide a certificate of marital status in your application, you declare under criminal liability, by signing the application, that you are unmarried.

• If you have a Danish Civil Registration Number ( a “CPR-nummer”), you do not need to include certificates of marital status for the periods you have lived in Denmark.
• If you have been married before, we will require documentation that the previous marriage has been dissolved. Acceptable documentation includes a judicial/administrative divorce decree, a death certificate, or a marriage annulment. Please note that if you are widowed in Denmark you cannot remarry while the estate of your deceased spouse is not settled.
• If your previous marriage ended in Denmark, it will generally not be necessary to provide documentation.
