Documentation of legal stay in Schengen for non-EU citizens
In connection with the launch of the Entry/Exit System (EES), there are changes to how you must document your legal stay in Schengen when applying for a Certificate of Marital Status. Please note that April 10, 2026, is the cut-off date for these changes. A distinction is made between entries and exits before and after this date. Documentation for legal stay for non-EU citizens in Schengen
- Residence permit: If you have a residence permit for a Schengen Member State, this serves as documentation of your legal stay in Schengen.
- Visa-required citizen with entry and/or exit before April 10, 2026: Visa sticker in passport together with a physical entry stamp.
- Visa-required citizen with entry and/or exit after April 10, 2026: Visa sticker in passport together with a printout of both the data and result pages from the EES visa calculator, as well as plane tickets/boarding passes.
- Visa-required citizen who has not entered Schengen before submitting the application: Visa sticker in passport together with a printout of both the data and result pages from the EES visa calculator for the intended stay in Schengen.
- Visa-exempt citizen with entry and/or exit before April 10, 2026: Physical entry stamp in passport.
- Visa-exempt citizen with entry and/or exit after April 10, 2026: Printout of both the data and result pages from the EES visa calculator, as well as plane tickets/boarding passes.
- Visa-exempt citizen who has not entered Schengen before submitting the application: Printout of both the data and result pages from the EES visa calculator for the intended stay in Schengen.
