Banning sham marriages

In Denmark, sham marriages are prohibited.

This means that a marriage must not be entered into if there is reason to suspect that the purpose of the marriage is to obtain the right of residence in Denmark, an EU country, in Switzerland, or in another country covered by the European Economic Area.

We may enquire about your relationship

Because of the prohibition against sham marriages, we will inquire about your personal relationship. We may, for example, ask for how long you have known each other, where you met each other, whether you have children together, or whether you live together or have previously lived together.

During our processing of your application, we may contact you if we have questions or need additional information. We may also invite you to an interview if we believe there is a need for this.

Do you have to include photos of you as a couple?

It is not a requirement that your application for a Certificate of Marital Status includes pictures of the two of you as a couple. But if we conclude your relationship is insufficiently documented in your application, we may ask you to for unedited photos of the two of you together.
